Standing wave problem solving Posted on 2013-03-29 by Eric Sullivan

So...I noticed in my studio, that I had slight standing wave isuues. Standing waves occure when sound is reflected off of two parallel surfaces. When the waves reflect off of one surface, it travels back over itself. I noticed that I was getting standing waves in my space due to its rectangular shape and parallel walls. This can be corrected through the use of diffusers and studio foams. I was able to fix my problem through home made solutions. I first cut fabric into different lengths and widths. Then, I folded them in have and sewed the two sides together. I also sewed the bottom shut so that I now hade a cylindrical sleeve that I could stuff with stuffing. Once I felt that they were filled to my liking, I sewed the tops shut. I then knoted a piece of fishing line to both ends of the top of the sleeve. Using hooks, I hung the cylinders from the fishing line virtcally and some horizontally making sure each one was at a different height. Right away I noticed that having the cylinders there to break up the flat surface eliminated the standing waves. This proved to be an effective and cheap method to fix my problems.
