Week 4 - Recording & Editing MIDI Posted on 2017-12-11 by Kyle Ellis

This week flew by as I found myself entirely engaged in putting the finishing touches on my first track as well as a second track, which I am very excited to be releasing soon. I worked with Alex on Saturday on sound designing, EQ’ing, and compressing a few items on both songs, and he was very impressed with my progress in such a short time. It’s a huge surprise to find out how efficient the program Ableton is; I finished my first track in about 24 hours and my second in about 14. In FL studio I think the quickest I ever did a track was 40-80 hours so Ableton is exponentially faster and is sounding way better!

This week I am going to finalize both tracks and get them posted to soundcloud. I’ve already contacted a female vocalist who I’ve worked with in the past and I’d like to feature her on one of my tracks. Once I have at least 3-4 quality songs on my soundcloud that represent my new sound and ability, I will be going to events to find other vocal artists to collaborate with. I figure this is the best way to get my foot in the door of the LA music scene and to start bringing people into the studio to record.

This week’s reading about recording and editing in MIDI was a breeze because I picked up an Alesis V49 MIDI keyboard last Friday, which I attribute to really speeding up my workflow. I’m also looking forward to going back into the studio with Alex to see what other kinds of helpful tips he can show me about MIDI that may not be in the book.

This week had no artists in the studio when I was there, but I did meet a hip hop producer/intern named Elliot. He is going through the Logic program and has experience using Monster, which is a different DAW.

This week's chapter was on mixing 101, which was a great review for what I've learned in the studio. The tips about what compression settings to use (generally) depending on the type of instrument (drums, vocals, etc... Read More >>
