Audio Engineering (Week 2) Mentor: Larry Goetz Posted on 2016-05-24 by Sam Wilson

This week Larry gave me a lesson on basic electronics. I learned about voltage, current and resistance. Larry explained to me how transformers work, he showed me a few digital circuit boards and a couple tubes, and he explained AC and DC and how DC is used in the studio. He also stressed the importance of impedance matching.

I also was able to sit in on a session this week. My job was to sit back and observe. I saw over 5 hours of drum and lead vocal tracking. This session was a great learning experience for me because I was able to see how a real professional recording session works. The things that stood out to me were the relationships and interactions between the producer and the artist and between the engineer and the producer. It was cool to see how the producer was able to push and motivate the artists to get exactly the sound he was looking for.

Larry told me there are a couple sessions next week for me. Hopefully I get a chance to help out and learn even more in these sessions.
