Discussion Over Lesson 17 Posted on 2013-07-06 by Daniel Amaral

Lesson 17 was about Sync and Automation. At first, this chapter didn't really "woo" me into reading about it, it sounded very boring and tedious, but as I continued to read, I realized exactly how important this process is. I learned that in order to sync sound and picture, there's a strict code of ethics that follow. First off, there is actually a timecode (which is usually known as SMPTE Timecode) that the picture and sound must abide and be synced by. There are also many different kinds of machines that are used in the syncing process as well. This chapter also briefly talked about different kinds of automation, such as console automation for example. It also talked about a good deal of different kinds of console automation, such as MIDI, Software Controlled, Moving Fader, and Voltage Controlled. So all in all, I didn't really think this chapter was extremely interesting, but I do realize it's importance and it's place in the recording field.
