Discussion Over Lesson 18 Posted on 2013-07-06 by Daniel Amaral

Lesson 18 was about Microphone Placement Techniques. It primarily went over the same things Lesson 8 went over, but was just a tad more detailed. It talked about different ways of miking such as using a decca tree, spaced pair, X/Y, and M/S. It explained the Blumein technique (which was using two crossed bi-directional mics that are offset by 90 degrees to each other which yields excellent ambient results), stereo spaced miking (an intensity-dependent system that uses only the cue of amplitude to discriminate direction), and the M/S miking technique (which uses two closely spaced matched pick-ups, but differs from the X/Y method by requiring the use of an external transformer matrix, active matrix, or software plug-in to work). It also talked about common drum miking techniques as well, such as putting the drumkit on a riser, the drumkit being placed in a different room, etc. It was mainly just a reiteration of Lesson 8, but a little more in depth, which does nothing but help.
