Lesson 4 Recording Connection Posted on 2013-05-21 by Alejandro Cruz

Lesson began at 12 noon and ended at 3pm. The lesson we were going over that day was microphones and the different kind of microphone's. The main studio was being in use by an artist so me and Donny went over the lesson in his son's office. Donny started by grabbing his microphone's he had in his main studio. He started explaining to me the two different types of microphones that there are one being a condenser microphone the other being a dynamic microphone. Donny began showing me how each one is different from one another and really emphazied that dynamic microphones require no phantom power if phantom power is turned on the ribbon in the microphone would burn and showed me a example of what it looked like burned. I then asked Donny what would be the best microphone to start with and he immediatly responded with the Shure SM57. Donny then began to shjow me how to tell the difference between a condenser and a dynamic microphone and even told me which microphone certain artist like Michael Jackson  prefered using being a Shure Dynamic which was pretty cool to know being that i am a big fan of Michael. He emphazied that there are no set rules only guidlines that if something sounds good go with it. After the we got done going over the lesson i just hungout at the studio looking at the other studio rooms looking how each was different than the other. It was a slow day at the studio so me donny and one of his workers Jessie just hungout i was reading about microphones on a magazine and asked Donny what was what and which mircophone is better so on & so on. At about 3 i had to leave to run spome errands me and Donny then set up my next lesson and that was the end of lesson 4. I felt good leaving knowing the different types of microphones and how each one is different, was really happy that i now know which microphone i will be needing and really looking forward to using it.
