Jim BattlesLouisvile Recording Connection

Week 2: Banshee Child Posted on 2017-06-26 by Jim Battles

After an exhausting 2 days at the Sweetwater Music Gearfest, I am tired and overstimulated, but went to a recording session with Banshee Child for 5 hours. They set up the studio last night, so I didn't make it for that, but still plenty to watch and learn. I realize I don't know enough yet to be useful, but that's coming.

It was a live session, full band at once instead of individual trackings. Many more mics than I expected to see in use. Most interesting was this photo, tube mics like I've never seen used--in an X/Y configuration since they are sensitive from the sides. They were  picking up room ambiance. Also a couple more XY rigs close up within the center of the band. The kick and snare were double mic'ed, snare with SM57 and a small diaphraghm condenser. Noticible difference in the capture sounds.

Dave likes to live record vs individual tracking. A little more rough and not too polished sound. More setup tweaking, but much less work on the editing side post session. Records fairly flat EQ so there's plenty room for manipulation later.
