i've been spending time on mix project for grade but i also have downloaded a few other projects to practice applying the plugin concepts put forth in chapter lessons . questions to mentor included not just how does this plugin work , but how do you choose the right one , if any , for a given track ? the answer of course as we've been told is there are no rules ( well , kind of ) LOL . the goal is to make a song sound good ... however you choose to get there ... anyways , i tried my hand for the first time at applying side chain compression where as the kick drum track triggered compressor on a bass drone track . i had a good conversation about that today with my mentor who said he was glad to see me thinking about things like this . he then mentioned and showed me about using a gate effect in a side chain as well . we touched on a few other components that effect the dynamic of a mix and he gave me some additional tracks to play with as well .... suffice it to say there is not a lack of practice material . i find myself sometimes inserting plugins and just seeing what it is they actually do just because i can , only now with a little bit better of an understanding of what is going on . truly it is an experimentation process for me still . obviously the more you try the more you find what works ... and this is how you learn what works best , how and when to use something and other editing strategies .
