Eunice GeeNew York City Recording Connection

Ch.2 Posted on 2016-08-09 by Eunice Gee

This chapter was a definite refresher for the basic laws of electricity and energy we take for granted everybut but need to understand to continue on becoming an audio engineer. At first, my brain hurt because it has been forever since I've taken a science class and it was never my best subject. However, with the use of reference photos, analogies, and simple explanations, I was able to keep connecting how the information is all relative.

My session with Mike went amazing. I had a lot of fun because I was able to observe a live recording session. Mike was recording the lead guitarist in a band named, "Loose Lips" and was just recording solo tracks. His band had previously recorded a number of songs but he returned alone to record some solo parts. Not only was Mike helpful in getting the artist more comfortable as he seemed tense and not in the groove, Mike gave helpful tips on how to make the recording sound better. I was pleasantly surprised how the artist asked Mike what he should do or change about his playing, rather asking or telling Mike how to improve on his production skills. I quickly realized the artist trusted Mike and valued his opinion. Luckily, I was able to stay for the longer part of the session but unfortunately, had to leave before it ended as time was quickly escaping from me.

So far, my first live observation session went great because it was just one person recording rather than a band or an entire group, which would have made me a bit nervous. I was nervous as it was with just one person! I also enjoy watching Mike work as he is very good at what he does with whomever he works with. I admire his ability to manipulate his sessions and hope I can mirror the same qualities soon.
