I always thought as a young child, a microphone was this spectacular, simplistic object. Even until this chapter, I never knew or explored microphones or how their position can change and affect how instruments sound and their loudness. I've always thought you just hold it infront of the instrument or person, with maybe a few inches away and you're all set. I really believed that was all there was to it. Since then, I realized how silly and oh so naive I was. All these components to understand a mic and when/how to use it just adds to my list of things to understand. pick up pattern to the physical make-up of the microphone all adds to the specs of a mic. Mike let me know how important it is to research the specs of any mic and he's right. It tells you everything there is to know about a mic by looking at the specs. After understanding the specs, you can now place the mic where it is best fit. He also showed me a neat trick where he places a mic underneath a grand piano facing the keys. The sound from beneath the piano does have a more rounded response as opposed to a mic placed above the keys.
