Learning about the different types of microphones has helped me understand the visual aspect of frequency response that I was not fully aware of before. Although I had a general idea of what different microphones looked like and what they might be used for, this expanded my knowledge even more. Carbon mics are the type used by police radios and do not produce a very clear sound. Condenser microphones have become the norm in many aspects of recording due to their frequency response and quality of sound. Dynamic microphones are very durable and therefore used in harsh environments and for loud sounds such as drums and brass. Ribbon microphones are not used as much but they are similar to condenser mics with less sensitivity. Used mostly for heavy metal and louder music.
