Chapter 5 Notes
- The sound of a microphone is illustrated by its frequency response curve.
- The frequency response defines the range of a sound a mic can reproduce & how sensitive that mic is within that range.
- A Mic with flat response is equally sensitive to all frequencies. Which records all types of sounds without any coloration or variations between different instruments or sounds.
- Flat Mics are good for recording acoustic or orchestral or vocal groups
- Mic with “shaped responses” are more sensitive to certain frequencies than others.
- Mic with decreased sensitivity to low frequencies reduces pick up from room noise and vibrations and counteracts the build up of bass that happens when a mic is too close to the recorded instrument.
- The build up of bass is called the “Proximity effect.”
- Vocals are better on a shaped response mic.
- Some mics have options to change the frequency sensitivity.
- Of those mics, the most common control is the “Lowfqz roll off” control.
