Compression is your friend or your enemy Posted on 2016-08-27 by Arman Sikder

Compression is a very interesting topic to me. One thing alot of starting producers dont realize is that sometimes you DON'T need compression. This tool is used whenever you want to level and compress your transients closer together so there arent any durastic level changes throughout the mix. Compression is almost always used on vocals because theres never telling how the vocalist will sing. It is a natural thing that we cannot completely control so we use artificial compression to level the vocalists voice so we can have a constant flow. You can also use this tool to fatten up your sounds, such as with drums. Once you EQ your channel you are distorting the audio signals so sometimes you can get rid of the thickness of your sound. That is when compression is used as wel. To get the thicker sound to resonate.
