Mastering is a very important step in making your music comparable to the industry standard. As a producer tho I really try not to worry about mastering since i have my own mastering engineer. I believe mastering your own music can be a very large mistake. You always want a second pair fresh ears to do the final touches. If you master someone elses project you are more likely to have better results. Usually you want your track to sound good by the time you finish the mix process. Never rely on the master engineer to make your track sound "better". If it doesnt sound good after the mix process then you need to go back and mix it again. Mastering is only supposed to make your music ready for duplication.
