Lesson #3
In these past two sessions I had the pleasure to sit in on a couple more sessions with Jae and his clents. I've been picking up on a lot of Jae's techniques. Especially when it comes to mixing vocals. In these sessions, especially the most recent, I feel we've focused a lot on the compressor plug-ins when mixing vocals. He showed me a lot of the different compressors used and their functions and different traits between each one. It is the engineers job to decide which compressor to use through testing each one individually because some compressors will give off a warmer tone while others will give off a sharper or clearer tone.
Towards the end of our session Jae took me into the live room and gave me a brief rundown of how we will mic up the different instruments like the piano, drums, and guitar amps. I'm mostly excited to work in that room.
After our session had ended Jae walked outside with me and we had a decent conversation about the business end of being an engineer and what its like working with other engineers and some complications that may arise. He told me about his personal experience and what he had done to prepare and get himself where he is today. I really appreciated him taking the time out to talk to me because it showed me that he genuinely cares about sharing his knowledge and getting me prepared for the audio engineering business.
