George KounnasPhiladelphia Recording Connection

Lesson 4 Posted on 2013-04-20 by George Kounnas

In the past couple weeks we have done some fun and exciting things. This past weekend I got the opportunity to be a part of a music video that Jae was doing for one of his clients. My responsibility was to provide the drummer for the video. They were in need of a trumpet player for the vieo and, to my surprise, they had asked me if I would play the trumpet for the video. I was happy to lend a helping hand. I had never done anything like that before and it was a great and really fun experience.

But the most exciting thing overall, Jae gave me a shot at recording a client by myself. He had setup a mock "session" and the "client" was an artist/ friend of his just helping out. Throughout the session Jae was coaching me on how to greet a client and what to say to them and what information to get from the client about what you're working on. I quickly became nervous because now everything I was watching Jae do and taking notes on would now have to be applied. I just recorded a quick verse for the client and did some minor mixing. For my first time recording someone, overall I feel I did well. Jae and the client were very helpful on giving advice throughout the session.

In our latest session we focused on microphones. We talked about different styles of mics and when to use certain mics. Jae gave me four mics to research and find as much information as possible on those mics. The mics I had to research were a Nuemann TLM 103, Sennheiser MD421, AKG P48, and a Shure SM7. After researching the mics we did a mic test for each one and also at various angles to study the different polar patterns for each mic. These tests gave me a greater idea of which mic to use for a certain situation.
