Lesson #5

In this lesson Jae and I just scratched the surface of the patch bay; explaining how it works and showing me the ins and outs.

Something I really enjoyed about these sessions is that Jae brought in two other students of his. It was a nice change of pace and also good to have another opinion and point of view in the room.

In our first two sessions we talked a lot about the business end of the industry. We got into things such as royalty percentages, publishing companies, and copyrights. I was unaware that publishing companies existed in the music industry. In our last session we listened to a couple seminars by a man named Seth Godin who is an entrepeneur. He talked about the differences between being an entrepreneur and being a freelancer; explaining that freelancers get paid for their skill and entrepreneurs build businesses larger than themselves. He said the most common source of unhappiness is not knowing which one you are. You have to decide which one you are and committ to it. In the seminar, Seth also talked about finding your audience. There is an audience for whatever market you're in and Seth gave some guideline questions to ask yourself to help find your audience.

Later in the session Jae gave each of us a chance to get behind the board and do some mixing of our own. That was especially fun for me. With each session, I feel more and more useful around the studio. Also, Jae has a real nice quality of assuring me with confidence.
