This was a great night, where I was able to be in the moment while laying down original tracks of my own and gain some high quality hands-on engineering experience with those tracks thanks to Joey Heier. I was exponentially happier with the result than my other attempt. Much less nervous and allot more confident in this particular arrangement. We decided to use a midi drum loop instead of live drums, which gave the song much more of a funk feel than pop. Joey added a sick, jazz-tinged piano track to the project, and I was able to utilize my Rickenbacker 4001 bass with some beloved SansAmp fuzz from ProTools. We double-tracked bass and vocals. One bass was clean and the other dirty. Both vocal tracks utilized a delay plugin. I created and assigned the track inputs, chose the plugins, rode the faders in the mix, the whole sha-bang-a-bang. Joey's production skills were again on display when he gave me his thoughts on an alternate melodic bass line I envisoned in my head. He said he thought this bass line would take away from the rhythm of the song. I couldn't disagree.
