Compression Posted on 2016-11-25 by Jesse Ludwig

To be honest, I was extremely confused about compression when I read throught the chapter and took the quiz. It wasn't till I got to the studio and learned from Joey, till I understood what it was all about. See Joey explained it in terms that I could understand. He opened up protools and showed me hands on. He explained that the higher register of the song comes down, and the lower register comes up to get the perfect balance. That made alot of sense. It compresses the lower and higher sounds into a level that doesn't go overboard and pierces the ears. It just a complete balance of the song or track. The more threshold you put on, the more you change and the more the higher and lower registers are compressed into a balanced level. Joey explained it in multiple ways. Compression limiter is like a car or truck that is limited to the speed it can go, called the governor. A car/truck could be limited to only go 55mph and no more. That is the limit. This is related becuase a level of a song, or the loudness of a song can only go to so much with a compressor limiter on. This is what makes it the perfect balance as I like to say. Another example that Joey taught me was when you listen to a pepsi commercial and it starts out really quiet and then gets super loud, compression will make the whisper louder and the loud spots quiter so it will not clip. All in all, I really think I understand compression now after learning from Joey.
