EQ! joey warned me that this is probably one the lessons that would give me some trouble. i read through the lessons 2 or 3 times and i thought i understood it for the most part. but what is great about actually going over the lesson with joey, is that he puts everything in practical terms. from the diagrams and such i understood bandwidth, and what a peaking curve looks like etc. but joey really lays it all out and tells you what he feels you need to know. instead of saying, "shelving is carrying a signal to rise or dip and then level out till the end", joey simply said, "shelving, two knobs. pass filter = on/off switch. parametric, 6 knobs, and graphic 31 faders for feedback removal. i walked away from the lesson knowing how to practically apply each type of EQ based on the sensitivity i needed. obviously it will take years of experience to be comfortable with using EQ but i have a much better understanding of real world application than if i only read through the book. for my session sit in this week, we recorded a rapper. his friend had already made the beats, so we loaded them into pro tools and layed down the raps over top. it was kind of a landmark because this was the first session where joey let me control the daw. he sat right next to me in case i needed him for anything but i was the one actually controlling the session. it means so much to me that he has enough trust in me to let me use his expensive equipment on a paying customer.
