REVERB.  another lesson on the easier side.  being a fan of a lot of old garage and garage revival, i love the warmth of a guitar drenched in reverb.  i enjoyed learning about how it actually works (with different waves of reflections off the room and such) and how it is used in the studio to simulate and environment.  i like how the book lays out exactly the amount of ms to space a delay on vocals depending on whether i would want to thicken them or actually create a discernable echo.  joey told me about the guy that came up with the idea to simulate reverb. his name was bill putnam and he was the first to use echo chambers to make artifical reverb on commercial recordings.  he used a long hallway under a theatre in hollywood, had a speaker playing frank sinatra with a mic at the other end and mixed that into the original voice.  its funny that he told me about this because i actually ran into a similar reverb room this weekend when my band was recording.  we spent about 14 hours this week in a basement studio in south philly recording 6 songs.  the guy recording us, mike, used the back room of his basement for reverb and remixed that into the guitar and vocals and it sounds amazing.  it was also interesting to watch mike work and see how him and joey have different styles.
