lesson 7 Posted on 2013-04-24 by Matthew Lutchman

this weeks topic was amplifiers.  ive been playing guitar and bass since i was in my teens, so im used to using amps, but i never really delved into what the different amplifiers are and how they are used and how they sound different.  so while i had a basic understanding, this lesson rounded out my knowledge to give me technical terms (summing amp, distribution amp, power amp) to describe what i already knew.  the same goes for current.  obviously ive seen AC and DC before, but never really knew the difference.  definately for audio engineering purposes, but also in everyday application, i think it is good to know that if you are using batteries, you are using DC  and if you are plugged into the wall you are using AC.

also, in the midst of our discussion, i admitted to joey that i had never really known how stereo sound vs. mono works.  he was more than happy to explain it (which took all of 3 minutes).  we both found it pretty funny that, in my 15+ years of being a musician, i had never thought to ask anyone or look up the difference!

for my session sit-in, i got to watch joey record vocal tracks for a young woman named amanda.  WOW. what a voice.  amazing range.  amazing control.  i watched her do take after take for an hour and a half and her voice showed zero signs of fatigue.  she kind of reminded me of whitney houston (her tone and phrasing).  joey showed me about putting time memory notes on a track to be able to jump to the start of a different song.  also, how to punch in to correct a certain spot.
