Matthew LutchmanPhiladelphia Recording Connection

lesson 8 Posted on 2013-05-01 by Matthew Lutchman

i enjoyed this weeks readings and lesson.  it dealt with mic placement techniques and the procedures that go along with it.  a lot of the procedure teachings (mic assignment, labelling and practice rundown) were stuff that i was very familiar with, having been through the recording process many many times as an artist, so it was a good refresher.  the placement techniques, however, is something that i had no idea about before.  when my bands would set up mics when we recorded, we had no idea about there being different types of mics, and that there were different techniques.  we would just kind of wing it, and set them up how we thought looked right.  not only will this lesson help immensely when i start my recording career, but also now, when i am recording my own bands (even if it just to make rough demos) i will be aware that some things sound better close mic'd and some distant.  i will know whether to mic the center or off center of an amplifiers cone, depending on how warm i want the sound to be.  i can try XY, MS or near coindent and see the difference.

the other day in the studio this week was another purely hands on session.  joey had a band that had a few different sessions that he let me go through and mix, just to get a feel for protools some more.  i am confident that when i recieve my mbox and copy of protools, ill be able to jump right in and feel comfortable.  i am exited to start experimenting with my own recordings.  where i live right now i cannot play my drums, but i am planning on moving in august and i want to find a house with an ample basement that i can have all my instruments, plus recording equipment permanently set up.
