Chapter 7 Tracking Posted on 2017-09-13 by Mike-Cole

Honestly much of what I learned from the lesson regarding tracking was about professionalism. What specifically about professionalism? Preparedness!

Being an artist I know that if I were to ever contact a studio and say that I wanted to record an EP or a single or an album I wouldn’t want to show up to an audio engineer who has no idea where to set up the instruments or has not yet listened to the type of music I wanted to record. Being prepared is important in every business especially in this one where people are paying for hours of studio time as well as hours of mixing and mastering and much time can be saved when you have an audio engineer who comes in and is prepared to do good work.

Good habits include

  1. Listening to samples of music from the artist
  2. Asking questions beforehand.
    1. What kind of sound are you going for?
    2. What kind of mic do you usually use?
  3. Setting up a pro tools template before the session
  4. Learning what instruments they will need

A good audio engineer is one who knows what they are doing and will make the experience the best for the artist.
