Chapter 4 was all about plug in's, pre amps, and much more.
This is when it clicked with me what a pre amp, condensor, and all of those gadgets really were.
I learned a lot about what the different connectors were as well as their purpose.
For example a TT cable has two rings and a ground. One ring is hot, ones cold, and the sleeve acts as the ground. TT cables are very similar to TRS cables. They are the most commonly used cables because they give out the best results.
After this lesson, I was able to sit in on a recording session with a singer (who sang covers) and an accoustic guitarist who accompanied her. The start was a bit rocky because they had never practiced together before, so they were having a hard time really getting in time with one another. It actually never really seemed to come together, but this was a good learning opporunity because this was a time that my mentor had to step in and really lead the entire session instead of letting the artist lead. He had to make sure they were both comfortable, start over a lot, make sure they liked the sound, and have them practice a lot before they actually started recording. In the end she had him master two of her songs, which sounded incredible after he did this.
I was able to see him go into pro tools and fix individual notes and put them in the key of the actual song. He was also able to fix volume levels, because the singer was a tad softer than the guitarist.
