Mix theory, Equalization, and Dynamic processing Posted on 2014-04-03 by Mickey Busa

We got these lessons a little out of order in reference to the book, but it worked well in the times i was their to do them the way we did. Equalization and Dynamic processing were reviewed 1 per morning in the two days i was in studio with The Works the band that has been recently in the studio the most, and that i talked about in my last post. Anyhow The first day we reviewed equalization, which is all about finding The freq. ranges that different instruments exisit or sound the best in and boost them, while removing any freq. that wolnt be rendered, to remove backround chatter on the tracks, and pops and cracks. Its to be utilized before during and after the mixing process. Wether you are bringing analog recordings in and running them through rack Eq's before conversion to Protools or Starting the final Mix eqaulization is Key, but sometimes simple is better so dont over do it. the Second day Dynamic processing was our topic of discussion. The idea of compression is simple, Dynamic range can be manipulated using processors such as Compressors, limiters, expanders, and gates. think of a Vice, thats what a compressor does to dynamic range its blends it ether to reduce or increase the range. I'm glad that im able to grasp the concepts and knowledge of these amazing tools now i just have to experience using them to fully understand what can be done.
