Mic Placement Posted on 2015-03-15 by Neil Goss

Interesting chapter.  It was also great to get into the studio and see exactly how the microphones should be placed for a specific set-up.  My mentor, Hollis, had recorded a piano riff with 5 of the miking techniques and I was able to hear the differences.  Spaced pair miking, x-y miking, mid-side miking, blumlein pair miking, ortf miking all have their own specific sound which makes perfect sense.  However, I'm realizing the techinique you use depends on what type of sound you/band is trying to capture.  Obviously, some of the miking techniques make more sense for certain instruments and recordings, but figuring this all out will take some time and is definately interesting.
