EQ is used to manipulate the frequency of a recorded sound wave to make it sound a certain way. Why should an audio engineer add EQ to a track? In ideal cases, hopefully you won't have to do much at all if the instrumentalist, instrument, and equipment accurately record the instrument. If not, EQ can be used to make a sound bassier like on a kick drum or even a vocalist who needs it. It can help you find the right range to make that awesome electric guitar sound even punchier. I frequently use it to bring a little more sparkle to dull cymbals in the higher end or bring an instrument out in the mix more. How have you used EQ in your mixes?
