When it comes to Automation, I use a lot of one knob filter. It adds life to sounds that may on their own sound flat. Sometimes it just takes bringing the high frequencies down for the verse and up for the chorus, or whatever the song wants the filter to do. Steve warned to not automate much and leave it more for the end. I recognize this as I have made songs in the past with too much automation caused the mixing to be difficult. i.e., Use clip gain vs. automating levels for every word is a good example. Logical and you can see the waveforms and their height. Protools rocks!!
