My first week in the studio was awesome! It started out with a 1 hour class with my mentor, Chris Bodall, during which he gave me a lot of tips and suggestions on the basics. Later on I got to meet another of his students, Kevin. Chirs had him give me an in depth tour of the studio and the equipment we'll be using. He also showed me the basic routing from the outboard compressor to the pre amp, and the interface. Inside of the studio's live recording room, Chris had Kevin show me how to "normal" the room, meaning how to clean up and place everything back to normal after a recording session. He also showe me how to properly place the microphone, and familiarized me with the toolbox, the place where all the mics are stored. On Wednesday, I sat in on a 2 hour vocal recording session with a very talented, energetic singer-songwritter tracking all of the vocals for her upcoming EP! I noticed a million small things that Chris does in his workflow that greatly increase speed and overall efficiency. I was blown away by how fast the session was progressing. I thought I'd just be sitting and watching but Chris constantly asked for me and Kevin's input and actually took a few of our suggestions. I even got to help out by helping the singer find correct some of her pitches be having her match pitch on a keyboard. Chris keeps the sessions really energized and fun. I had a great time working with Chris and Kevin this weekend and I'm very excited to go into the studio next weekend and get to work again!
