Isaiah PutmanSan Antonio Recording Connection

We had to take an extra week because the band I had scheduled to record July 20 bailed, so I needed to schedule some new guys. I got a band called Freebies, the singer of which I went to college with and collaborated with on a few projects, and whom I knew I could trust with something like this.

Monday we set up for them, just two guys: 1) electric guitar / vocals, 2) drums. Mr. Sinko wished there could’ve been more members to give me a better sense of a full band recording session (I still haven’t recorded more than two people at once), but it’s really all we could get on such short notice. We decided to record the guitar three ways: 1) direct input from the guitar, 2) direct input from the effects pedals, 3) microphone on the amp, post effects of course. In the final mix we only ended up using the last two, and 3 especially. The only thing we did differently on the drums from what we’d done before was put the AKG C-24 up very high, about 12 feet above ground, as opposed to where he usually kept it around 8-9 feet. I really liked the end result so I will definitely be doing that again.

The Thursday recording session went very smoothly, took an hour less than I expected. We did several takes of each of the two songs. They kept getting better and more confident so I think we could have done even more, but they were satisfied with what we got. We recorded the vocals along with the intrumental performance to get it the right feel but then we re-recorded the vocals with the Neumann U-47. The singing wasn’t great (I had to use Melodyne to fix the pitchiness later) but overall it worked out pretty well.

This week I spent mixing the two Freebies tracks. Monday I worked on the longer one which was about 6 minutes. They wanted the mixes to sound pretty raw, but Mr... Read More >>
