Week 3 - Intro To Pro Tools, Recording Hands On Posted on 2014-10-16 by Vincenzo Larich

The past week has been very interesting. I'm now starting to dive more into the hands on training that the Recording Connection has promised. I went to the session where they recorded a drummer by the name of Danny. I was able to help out with setting the mics up for the drum kit, seeing what mics were used where and why, the different positioning of the mics and how they effect the sound either in a positive way or negative, etc. All very informative.

After all that, I was able to sit back and observe how a true producer and engineer work with the artist to create the exact sound that's envisioned. And it's like art coming together, listening to all the sounds and beats a drummer can make from the direction of the producer, and the producer then manipulating it into perfection. Thats exactly what draws me in, to be a part of that process from an idea to the listeners ear.

Watching the engineer do his thing on Pro Tools was also a reality check though. I know I am just beginning into this but I'd be lying if I said it didnt look confusing. But that doesn't mean I'm not looking forward to getting my hands on Pro Tools for myself. Just a couple more weeks and I'll be learning way more, can't wait.

I went back a few days later for another lesson and was actually able to record Josquin and Thomas playing the bass guitar and an acoustic guitar. With the direction of Thomas, I felt very comfortable doing so and that was my first taste of the recording business. Awesome only begins to describe how this program feels.
