Last week in the studio I learned more about mixing in studio A on hyde street in SF. It was a cool experience because i got to mix a track in protools which was a electronic/hiphop beat made by a professional producer. It was good to see a beat like that broken down into individual tracks because it gave me a good understanding of the composition process and what was creating the sound as a whole. It involved about 20 tracks of various instuments which all already sounded pretty good. My mentor told me that if you start out using really good virtual instruments or synthesisers, it can sound really good even before doing much mixing. Of course this probably usually requires great programing technique and skill. Anyways, I basically ended up just adjusting some levels, panning, did some eq and added a little bit of reverb and delay to a couple things. Also my mentor showed me how to side chain a compressor to a pad to get a gain pumping effect and also how to side chain the snare to a gate wich opened to trigger a white noise osilator. - Brett Robinson
