First Session! Posted on 2014-08-15 by Kirk Eckhardt

This past Tuesday, my mentor Ken had me come into the studio for my first live recording session with a local artist. It was FANTASTIC!  It was an acoustic set, just the artist and his guitar. We used two mics, a Neumann U47 with the Telefunken 201M tube for the vocals and a Neumann U47 FET for the guitar (here is an amazing resource on vintage mics - http://www.coutant.org/.) The guitar was also connected through a DI. The set was recorded through a MOTU interface using DP8 on a Mac, but Ken then recorded the set to an analog tape, and then back to digital, by which process gave the tracks the fullness and warmth the artist was looking for. I was able to talk with the artist for a while about various things relating to not just his music but his life in general. It was a great connection to make. He gave me his card and when my Cajon http://www.schlagwerk.com/products/cajon/cajon-agile/dual-red/ is delivered, were gonna get together and jam! Sweet!

Then on Wednesday, I had my weekly teaching session. I got all of the technical qustions correct on the quiz, and missed every single question relating to the history of the mic. More study, more flash cards!!! Still learning what it is gonna take to be a good student.
