Information Overload Posted on 2014-08-21 by Kirk Eckhardt

Being 47 years old, lernin' ain't as easy as 'twonce was, lol! This weeks lesson was really great, though, and Ken had a lot of supplimental info for me about microphone placement. One thing in particular that he cautioned about, in miking cymbols, is that the mic should be placed at the center point of the cymbol's pivot, so that the sound picked up would have the least variance. Otherwise, the recording would have a wavering sound to it.  We talked a lot about phasing problems and how close attention to mic spacing would help eliminate most of the issues. We discussed the 3:1 rule of mic spacing, which states that a second mic must be at least three times away from the sound source as the initial mic. He showed me a really cool Youtube vid concerning the 3:1 rule.( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSr9OSVE2eE) which audibly demonstrates the phasing that happens when mics are too close together.
