Lesson #4

For my fourth lesson, I actually got to sit behind the mixing board and get my feet wet in how to work a mixer. There were about 15 different tracks for me to play with and Mark instructed me to mix the song (David Bowie’s “Fame”) to where I wanted it to be, and allowed me to listen to it as many times as I wanted. In about 3 or 4 plays through, I was happy with the mix and Mark stepped in to right everything I did wrong. As it turns out, I didn’t do that great of a job with mixing. I tried to get creative with how I was panning certain tracks, but as it turns out, I didn’t take enough time to carefully orient everything and certain tracks were hopelessly wrong. I don’t let that discourage me though; I’m here to learn after all. That segment of the lesson took up most of the time I was there, but otherwise Mark did what he usually does with evaluating my out of class bookwork and went over things with me that I didn’t understand. I feel as if I’m really starting to absorb and take in the content of the course and understand it as well as I can.
