In this lesson I learned about compression. A compressor helps make recordings sound more tight and consistent. The first comercially avalible compressor was released in the 1950s, created by Bill Putman. There are many different techniques you can use compression on a recording. A few of the techniques are: Ducking, Multiband compression, Parallel compression, pumping and Side Chain.
