Session 12 Posted on 2018-10-15 by Margaret Cantwell

It's been a strange few weeks. In September I came down with Bronchitis, and during my sickness, my mentor became very ill. He's been ill now for a month and a half, and I have been transferred to a substitute who's been teaching me for the past two weeks. His name is Terence. He knows his stuff. I do hope Tom recovers.

For chapter 12, I went over the chapter with Terence, and reviewed parts that I did not understand. In particular, stereo image. I have heard of stereo image before, and have read about it. This chapter also covered it, but I still did not get it. Terence explained it to me. He pointed to the left and right speakers, and then a small mono speaker in the middle. He played "While My Guitar Weeps" by the Beatles, and asked me to point out which speaker the piano and guitars were coming from, and which speaker the bass and drums. I noticed I could hear the drums and bass on the right, and the guitar and piano on the left. He told me that is stereo imaging. What the recorder, that is, engineer is to do, is picture where they believe where each instrument should go. It's like you're imagining and then projecting it. Basically, put yourself in the position of the musicians, kind of like pretending you are on stage and organizing where each instrument goes, rather than standing and looking at the stage, and pointing 'drums should go there, bass goes here.' Terence explained really well, a lot better than I can explain it. Now I understand stereo image better.

I am in the middle of working on the mix assignment. I tend to take my time with these. It will be uploaded soon.
