Today in the studio I worked with a band called the Birthday Cakes that were doing a song for the Blood Services here in Sudbury. It was so exciting because it was my first time seeing a band record off the floor! I got to help them set up their instruments run up and down the stairs patching in headphones, microphones, and photo copying Musial sheets with chords. I got to see the song being recorded from the start. Shawn first had them all together downstairs recording there song setting levels, and letting the artists have a feel for each other. After they jammed for awhile he had each of them record their parts individually. It was amazing how exhausting the entire process can be, but it is even more amazing watching and listening to how the song grew and expand as he added in harmony, and effects processing. I understand I am just an assistant, and do not want to waste his clients time, but I wish I could be more hands on in the studio. I feel like I would grasp more because I learn more if I apply myself physically. Unfortunately I have not had a lot of hands on training, and more watching how Shawn does the magic that he does. I often feel like he doesn’t have much time for me either, because he is so busy with clients and projects. I am also behind in lessons because he doesn’t have the time to go over the content. Hopefully in the upcoming weeks I will get to press more buttons and record some artists or work on my own music. This course has just flown by, and I am worried about what will happen when it is finished....
