This week we covered another very key lesson, microphone placement. You can pick the perfect microphone to record with but the placement of the microphone is just as important as choosing the correct microphone. Jeff and I went through many different types of microphone arrangements: ORTF, Blumlein pair, mid-side, and X-Y. We also reviewed accent miking and ambient miking. Accent miking is crucial when needing to pull out a particular instrument giving you the ability to adjust as needed. Jeff also pulled up some of his old protools sessions and let me have a listen to the difference in recording a guitar through direct line in and by miking the amp. He said both ways work well, it really just matters what the artist wants their music to sound like.
