Lesson 14: Dynamic Signal Processing Posted on 2014-06-11 by Brian Mulvany

We started out this Lesson in the studio with Phil showing me some mixes he is working on, one is an ambient instrumental. The other is a rap parody - quite the variety of music that he works with!

On the topic of dynamic signal processing, some techniques we went over were:

  • Compressing bass and guitars in the recording stage with a DBX 162
  • Parallel compression of a drum bus and examples of this on his ambient song mix
  • Sidechain compression of a delay pedal (with a long delay time) on a guitar signal chain, allowing the delay effect to kick in only when the guitar sound itself had lowered in level.
  • Gating techniques
  • Digital compressors such as those made by UAD and Tube Tech
