Week 11 BLS Posted on 2014-12-12 by Mitch Darlington

Mid-Term week! On thursday I we set up some scratch tracks for pre-production on an album for a young female singer-songwriter. We recorded a variety of orgiginal songs using Kaj's Taylor acoustic guitar plugged directly into the Chandler LTD pre-amp. We also recorded some scratch vocals with the Newman 69 condensor microphone. All of the lyrics were written out and the songs were adjusted so they flowed nicely. This session was great to see a recording at it's very first steps of pre-production.

Friday we recorded drums for another singer-songwriter named Caroline. Kaj wrote out an input list for setting up drum and bass recording. we set up 10 mics for drums. a sub mic, an RE-20 for the kick drum, a 58 above the snare and a 57 below, a SM7 on the high hat, a R92 ribbon on the rack tom, a coles mic on the floor tom, a sony C38 on the ride, 2 geffels mics for overheads, and the sm69 set up in between the geffels with one mic faced at the drums and one away for the close room and mid room mics. We also set up the Mark Bass amp in the Iso booth with an EV635 placed infront of the left speaker just to the left of the cone. In the control room we set up a Fender Precision bass plugged into a DI sans amp. I set up a pro tools session while the other intern connected everything into the patch bay. While we set up everything for drum and bass Kaj and Caroline created scratch tracks with acoustic guitars and vocals for the drummer to follow. Kaj and the session drummer figured out all of the drum and bass parts for the song as I ran pro-tools. We recorded for the rest of the day and got a lot of good work done.
