So, now as I am starting to play around with Pro Tools, Edwin has begun to show me some plugins as I am doing some mixing. He had me do a reggae song and since I have listened to a lot of reggae it was fun to hear how all the instruments and vocals work together to make a reggae song. I still have trouble trying to blend the percussion together since I am more of a vocalist and melodic instrumentalist, so we broke it down to listen to more of the percussion and what kind of levels are ideal in order to get the "perfect" blend. I still think that getting a "perfect" blend is subjective to what the producer or engineer likes to hear. I found this to be the case when Edwin was helping me find the most ideal percussion blend that he definitely likes to feel like he's in the room with the drummer and essentially feel the pounding in his body. I would have no problem with that with the only exception that I like things at a lower volume which can ultimately affect how a track is blended. So, now that Edwin and I know that I have sensitive hearing he has given me some suggestions on how to still come up with an ideal blend on a track without destroying my hearing and to also satisfy listeners. This particular session was an eye-opener on some of the things that I feel I need to improve on and proved to be very helpful.
Not only did we practice mixing, but now he has showed me how to work with limitors and other certain plugins and processing in order to get ready for Chapter 10. Now I get to work with the nitty gritty details which is what I have been waiting to do.
