Lesson #: 17

List one or two paragraphs on what you learned, what did you do?

It has been an interesting and educational few weeks being able to actually get in to the studio to record a full track. Now that all the recording has been done – it’s time for the difficult, yet exciting part to start, mixing. As each of the weeks went by, my mentor still managed to get one on one sessions with each student to go over notes, assignments and questions. With that being said, my schedule and lessons were taught in perfect timing to when we finished recording my songs for our final assignment. As we move into talking about mixing and the art of it, we start by going over what I think mixing is and techniques used. I quickly realize that there is a big different between amateur and professional mixing engineers. This could be anything from your work flow & organization to how you approach a mix.

In previous lessons we talked a lot about the different types of plugins, what they could be used for and how they can enhance or manipulate a sound. This week we focused on talking about how much is too much, which to me seems very explanatory, but is something you have to look deeper into. Now with the lesson over, it’s time to experiment and have some fun with this mix.

Write down model numbers and manufacturers of equipment or gear you've worked on.

  • Soundcraft Ghost
  • Pro Tools HD
  • Yamaha NS10 Studio Monitors with Bryston 2B
  • Makie HR824 near field
  • 1176LN Black Faced Compressors

What do you feel were your strengths and weaknesses on this week’s lesson?
