Adding Some Character To Your Mix Posted on 2013-11-12 by Kamela Singh

Date of Session: Wednesday, September 25, 2013
Time in: 3:00am
Time out: 5:00pm
Lesson #: 18

List one or two paragraphs on what you learned, what did you do?

This week I got to learn a couple more techniques as well as continue in our workbook. As we move through the workbook, we talked about sync and automation. While both topics may not seem that interesting, it’s actually the opposite and is quite important. Sync really intrigued me because it’s that element of surprize, you don’t know if they did that on set or if they recorded it in post-production or overdubs. In terms of automation, it has made the job of manipulating the volume of each track in certain places easier than ever before.

In learning about automation this week, it gave me great inspiration to play around with it a little more on the tracks that we recorded and are in the mixing process. I learnt that not only can you automate individual audio and midi tracks but also aux tracks.

Write down model numbers and manufacturers of equipment or gear you've worked on.

  • Soundcraft Ghost
  • Pro Tools HD
  • Yamaha NS10 Studio Monitors with Bryston 2B
  • Makie HR824 near field
  • EQ Plugins
  • Compressor Plugins

What do you feel were your strengths and weaknesses on this week’s lesson?

STRENGTHS

WEAKNESSES

  • Being able to give real life examples of each topic learnt about
  • Preparing sessions that utilize what we are talking about during the session
  • Identifying my knowledge on signal flow

  • Preparing a couple extra topics to go over or touch on that I didn’t fully understand
