August 31st, the last day I was in the studio, was the best time I've had there so far. Len had nothing scheduled for the day so we continued working on the beat that I mentioned in my previous blog post. Right when I arrived, I continued mixing the instruments. I have very little experience doing so, but Len was kind of giving me no choice but to use my ears and figure it out myself. I added eq and compression to most instruments as well as some delay and reverb. Out of nowhere Len pulled out a shaker and started shaking it as the beat was playing. It sounded like it was meant for the beat, so he went in the booth and I recorded and tracked it. While I was mixing the shaker into beat, Len got another idea of doing some vocals over it just so I can practice and get used to a bit of everything. He had me do it all myself, including adjusting the outboard gear. We used the BAE Neve 1028 (similar to a 1084 with extra EQ) and a black faced Urei 1176 for compression. This was my first time using outboard gear so it was pretty awesome ! He ended up recording 6 tracks of vocals, several takes of each, so once he was done I started piecing together the best parts of each take. Once I had all that done, it was on to mixing. It was the first time I've done that many things all on my own so I feel as though it was a great learning experience and a great day in general !!
