Drums & Things ! Posted on 2016-09-08 by Tyler Tweed

I was in the studio on Tuesday & Wednesday this week. Tuesday, My mentor and I recorded a bunch of drum loops to use for making beats. We set up the live sound room with around 10 mics for the drums. (hh, snare, overhead etc.) I got to see what mics are used for certain instruments like the Ev re10 for snares & the shure 57 which you can use for quite a few different instruments. Another student was also there so him and Len took turns playing the drums and all three of us took turns doing the tracking.

On Wednesday, Len and I made a random rock song just for fun and practive. First Len played some bass guitar right in the control room and we recorded it via Direct Input and ran it through a Summit Preamp and also through a CBS Labs Audiomax Compressor. After we were satisfied with the bass track, Len went into the live sound room and played several takes of drum tracks. There was 10 tracks in total ( everything was still set up from the previous day ) such as kicks, snares, overhead & room mics etc. After around 7 takes, I started the editing process going through all the takes and selecting the best parts of each one. I didn't quite get to finish which I don't mind because it's good to have a few projects on the go to work on when there is no artists or anything else going on in the studio.

I've been learning so much in every session, especially the last few. I'm in the audio engineering program but I'm also very interested in making beats and Len has been showing me things of that nature as well. I finally bought my iLok & also recently purchased a MIDI controller (AKAI MPK Mini MK2). I'm more excited than I've ever been to continue this course, learn everything I can and also start making my own beats !
